SUMMARY:Live Music at The Nick presents Roy Forbes with opener Mike Crampto
 n
LOCATION:Crescent Heights Community Hall\, 1101 2nd St. N.W.\, Calgary
DESCRIPTION:Roy Forbes is one of Canada’s best loved songwriters and perf
orming artists. From his searing rendition of Hank Williams’ So Lonesome
I Could Cry\, to his sweet treat Christmas anthem- Mince Meat Tart\, or L
ifting My Heart\, Roy has made his mark as a solo\, band leader and songwr
iter. As host of Roy’s Record Room on CKUA\, he’s a popular historian
of 78 RPM records. The last few years have been a challenge. Having dealt
with poor vision all his life\, Roy was blinded by an accident. As Roy beg
an getting used to a life without sight\, new songs began to emerge. Edge
 of Blue is 10 songs full of wisdom\, confessions\, vulnerability\, self- r
eflection\, and celebration. These are songs with memorable words\, compel
ling compositions and a voice every bit as original as when the “kid ful
l of dreams” first hit the big city over fifty years ago – pure Roy Fo
rbes. Mike Crampton writes songs that behave like good stories. They arriv
e funny\, sneak up on something honest\, and leave you thinking about a li
ne long after the show is over. Based in Didsbury Alberta\, Mike blends dr
y humour with sharp\, observant songwriting about modern absurdities\, awk
ward humanity\, and the moments we don’t always say out loud. His debut
album Death\, Dying\, and Other Hilarious Topics moves easily between wit
and vulnerability\, pairing laugh out loud songs with quieter\, unexpected
turns. A Mike Crampton show is more than just listening\, it is shared. E
xpect plenty of singing along\, playful back and forth\, and the kind of e
asy audience interaction that turns a room full of strangers into co-consp
irators for the night. Come for the humour\, stay for the heart\, and be r
eady to sing a little louder than you planned.
